What makes the sensory tOT spot Occupational Therapy difference?

sensory tOT spot Occupational Therapy offers Individualized Occupational Therapy Treatment Services to children Birth to 21 years of age.  These services can look different depending on your child’s individual needs and what works for your family.  Services can occur a few times a week on a continuous basis; or a more flexible schedule can be developed offering more consultative and educational sessions teaching you, the caregiver, sensory strategies and providing you with a Home Exercise Program to complete at home with your child.  sensory tOT spot Occupational Therapy works for you and your family and will develop a tailor made treatment plan to meet your child and family’s needs and schedule.

sensory tOT spot Occupational Therapy follows a family centered, child directed, and therapist guided practice model:

This means that therapy sessions are family centered.  We work directly with your family as a whole.   Parents and caregivers play an active role in all aspects of treatment planning and implementation with sensory tOT spot Occupational Therapy because therapeutic benefits are the greatest when activities and strategies are used both during and outside of therapy sessions.  You will assist with identifying your child’s primary needs and prioritizing those needs, if necessary, to develop appropriate and attainable goals for your child.  You will learn the strategies and treatment techniques to best support and help your child with improving their skills and overall well-being.

Your needs as parents and caregivers are taken into account during all treatment planning and interventions.  Furthermore, siblings are also welcome and encouraged to participate  during therapy sessions as well.  At sensory tOT spot Occupational Therapy we see your family unit as a whole, and understand that your child’s individual challenges affect the entire family and treatment is provided with this in mind.

sensory tOT spot Occupational Therapy  follows a child directed approach.  When children are motivated they are more likely to be engaged fully allowing for those positive connections within the brain to occur.  Also, the more motivated and engaged the child the more likely they are to step outside of their comfort zone and try new experiences during therapy sessions.  Children are given full control over what is done during therapy sessions and treatment activities are child directed.

At sensory tOT spot Occupational Therapy, we never force a child to do something they do not feel comfortable doing; instead we work on building a trusting therapeutic relationship where encouragement and modeling will result in lasting progress during treatment sessions.  When a child is forced to do something their body is not ready for a negative association is made in the brain and during our therapy sessions we want the positive connections to outweigh the negative.

Finally our therapy services are therapist guided.  As an Occupational Therapist, our role is to guide therapy sessions and treatment activities to facilitate progress towards your child’s goals.  we seamlessly adapt activities and set up the environment to facilitate the biggest therapeutic benefit for your child to achieve their goals.

We do not lead or direct therapy sessions, instead we follow your child’s lead and use my skilled knowledge of sensory processing to adapt and guide activities to meet your child’s needs and work towards improving their  abilities.   Building off of what your child is already showing us and telling us is the key to improving their functional abilities, they just need skilled guidance to get there and that’s where we come in.

Following this family centered, child directed, therapist guided model allows for therapy sessions to be positive, fun, and engaging for your child.  This works to develop a trusting relationship between the therapist and your child, where we quickly become a friend, advocate, and cheer leader during therapy sessions.  Therapy sessions are so much fun, that many times it doesn’t even feel like work for your child.  From experience I can tell you that this quickly leads to faster therapeutic results from treatment sessions and a happier and more confident child.
