What is Pediatric Orthopedic Rehabilitation?

Orthopedic based occupational therapy provides comprehensive care for infants, children and adolescents with a wide range of hand and upper limb conditions (arm, elbow, wrist and finger). Therapy is provided by an occupational therapist with training in the treatment of complex congenital, musculoskeletal and orthopedic conditions.  As always therapy is done in a play-based format to engage and motivate the child to participate in all of the exercises and therapeutic activities in order to re-build range of motion, strength and overall function of the upper extremity; all while maintaining joint integrity and decreasing any pain your child may be experiencing if any.

Treatment and Techniques:

  • Soft Tissue Mobilization, Scar Management and Desensitization
  • Modalities for non-pharmacological Pain and Edema Relief
  • Joint Mobilization and Range of Motion
  • Upper Extremity Strengthening
  • Coordination and Dexterity Training
  • Retraining and Modification of Daily Living and Self-Care Activities
  • Adaptive Equipment Selection and Training
  • Instruction in Energy Conservation and Joint Protection

*Each child’s treatment plan is uniquely developed based on their individual needs and abilities, treatment techniques and approaches are always selected based on your child’s needs each session.  No two therapy sessions are exactly the same.
